I picked up a book I’d loved at eleven, expecting nostalgia and not much else. Instead I noticed an entire subplot about a parent’s quiet financial stress that had gone completely over my head as a kid, and it recontextualized a character I’d dismissed back then as just being mean.
The writing itself held up better than I expected too, sentences that read as simple and effective rather than dated, though a couple of side references clearly hadn’t aged well.
It’s worth returning to a book you loved young, not for the comfort of familiarity, but because you’ll genuinely read a different book than the one you remember.
