Five Nonfiction Books That Changed How I Take Notes

None of these were actually about note-taking directly, which is part of why they stuck. A book on how scientists think reshaped how I ask questions before writing anything down. A book on old letter-writing habits made me start dating every note, something I’d never bothered doing before.

The common thread across all five wasn’t a system or a method, it was the idea that notes are for future-you, a specific and somewhat forgetful reader, not for capturing everything in the moment.

I stopped trying to write complete sentences and started writing for someone who’ll only have thirty seconds to skim this later. That one shift did more for my note quality than any productivity book aimed directly at the topic.
